Week 11 GOTW

We have another “game of the year” out west this week.

#7 Oregon VS #4 Stanford @ Stanford, CA

In this matchup you have to look at the Cardinal QB Andrew Luck aka Mr Perfect.

I could ramble on and on about how perfect he is and how much i love him, but instead i’ll tell you about his entourage.

Running Back Duo Stepfan Taylor & Tyler Gaffney: This combo may not be explosive or as razzle dazzle as the Oregon backs, but they still put  up the numbers. Taylor leads with 891 yards 8Tds, while Gaffney has chipped in with 344 & 6. If these 2 don’t produce they can even turn to Anthony Wilkerson, who has added 253/3.

As for the receiving corp it is definitely tight end heavy. Cobly Fleener, Zach Ertz & Levine Toilolo. Fleener is the star of the group with 20 catches 431 yards & 8 TD’s.

As for the Ertz Toilolo combo, they have been productive combining for 35/524/7.

This extremlemy helpful as it appears the Cardinal are with out starting WR Chris Owusu. OWusu was injured last week against Oregon State, being taken off the field in an ambulance.

So WR Griff Whalen, still leads all the team with 36/534/2. Whalen must step up to help Mr Perfect.

As a team Stanford is a strong D giving up only 16.6ppg. But they lack a star since Shayne Skov was injured. Thats why i love the emergance of junior LB Chase Thomas, this cat has picked up the slack of the absence of Skov. Thomas is leading the team with 12.5tfl and 6.5 sacks. He is also 5th on the team with 36 tackles.

Now for the Ducks, you start with the 3 headed monster that is the Running Backs.

Welcome back

You have star LaMichael James, senior back up kenjon Barner & true fresh De’Anthony Thomas. After missing 2 games with a shocking arm injury, James has picked up right where he left off. James has tallied 1061 yards & 9TD’s. Not bad for 7 games!

Then in the absence of James, Barner stepped up to the plate & has added 601 & 8. Now the new pup Thomas, this slick player is also leading reciever. Rushing he has 349 & 5. While recieving Thomas has 25/382/6.  Although Oregon like to spread the field and run, they still have 2 solid options at the reciever position.

Lavasier Tuinei & Josh Huff have combined for 45/597/8. Thats enough big plays to stop defences from ganging up on the running game. QB Darron Thomas is developing as a passer, although being roughed up recently, Thomas is dangerous passing & throwing.

He’s more accurate throwing at 60.1%. While totaling 1549 yards & a 19/5 TD-INT Ratio. As for The Ducks undersized D, i like the speed that they poses. There is 2 players who i like to make a big impact.

Senior LB Dewitt Stuckey: Stuckey is making the most of his 1st season as a starter, the undersized backer is leading the team with 55 tackles. Also chipping in with 3 sacks.

Safety Eddie Pleasant: This senior safety is the last line of defence for the Oregon D. Pleasant has 42 tackles, 1 sack & leads the team with 3 picks. Pleasant is the best bet to pick off Mr Perfect.

All in all this is a very close match up. Scoring wise & yardage wise.  Stanford is averagin 48.2ppg & 505ypg against Oregon’s 46ppg & 510ypg.

Overall they are so similar, yet they run completely deifferent offenses.

I hate to say it but i believe Oregon will ruin Stanford’s BCS hopes just like last season.

i see it as a 44-41 final score favouring Oregon.

Sorry Mr Perfect.

Auburn @ Georgia

Welcome to the game that will decide the SEC East Champion, Georgia wins and it is all theirs.

The only thing that stands in their way is perhaps a very inconsistent Auburn team.

This Auburn team behind junior QB Trotter and sophomore RB Dyer have done ok this season.

Not to mention a return for star running back freshman Crowell who despite a slow start has managed to get his motor going later in this year.

The difference is Aaron Murray who is a superstar QB from a hard conference and has already passed over 2,000 yards and 23 TDs need a remind you he is only a sophomore.

Apart from Crowell needing to grow up this Georgia offence is finally clicking and looking like the team it was predicted to be.

Needs to grow up and become a star that he is.

It also sweetens the deal that the game is in Georgia, not that seems to mean anything these days.

As El Jugador said in his write up this game will depend on which Auburn team shows up. Is it going to be the team that never says ‘die’ scores 40 points and their defence is unbelievable. Or will it be the team that can’t put up any points and can’t cover anyone on D.

Lets hope for my sake it is the latter and Georgia put up some big numbers against a top 25 fraud team.

Freshman GOTW

TCU @ #5 Boise State

I’m The Freshman, and I’m here to tell you about the mighty Boise State Broncos. #5 in the polls, #1 in your hearts and this week they’re up against the #20 TCU Horned Frogs. Wait, what?! They’re not ranked anymore? Because they lost to…SMU?!

…This makes it harder to convince you all that it’s a GOTW contender rather than the frontrunner for cupcake of the season.

All kidding aside, this game actually has the potential to cause the Broncos some problems. TCU’s 16th ranked rushing offense has outrushed the opposite 7 times to 2. Four of these times were by a margin of 200 more yards, and a further two more times by 100 to 199 yards. Only two occasions have they failed to reach 200 rushing yards. This would present a problem to most defences, but the Boise State defence boasts some solid numbers itself. Only three times has a team rushed for more than 150 yards on Boise State, and only once has that resulted in more than two Touchdowns.

There are some aspects of TCU supporters that aren’t a fan of the passing game of the Frogs, but I believe that it’s underrated, and actually very consistent. QB Casey Pachall has thrown for over 200 yards 8 out of 9 times. This would have worried the Boise State fan early in the season, who started out allowing 236 yards to Georgia, and more worryingly, over 250 yards to Toledo. But since then the defence has really clamped down on the passing game, and not allowed more than 150 yards in the air since that game.

The only question mark hovering over the Boise defence is that it is relatively untested. They gave up decent yards to Georgia, and even more to Air Force – so whether or not the numbers that they’ve put up are misleading or not is a question that can’t really be answered until game time.

Where the game will unquestionably be won for Boise is when they have the football. While the Bronco’s rush is uninspiring, it is still solid, and the running game, despite claims that RB Doug Martin is not at 100%, will keep the TCU line honest. This will open up the real difference-maker in this game, and that is quite obviously Boise’s Heisman-candidate QB Kellen Moore.

The Boise passing game has out-passed its opposition every single game this year. Not only that, but half of the time this season Boise’s passing yards has out-distanced the opposition’s entire total offense. This is a suffocating passing game, one that is six times over 250 yards. Three of these times are for more than 300 yards, and twice for exactly 281 yards.

Contrast this to TCU’s highly questionable passing D. Despite the aforementioned 8-1 games with over 200 passing yards, they have allowed more passing yards than the opposition 5 of nine times. They’ve allowed 200 yards themselves six of nine times.

With the ball on the ground, this will be a knock-em-down, drag-em-out affair that Boise could very well end up on the wrong side of. For my money though, the game will be won for Boise in the air, and with that I’m predicting a hard-fought 27-13 Boise State victory.
